12/10/2009 - Cincinnati, OH (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The 19th-ranked Cincinnati Bearcats return from a lengthy layoff to take on the Miami-Ohio RedHawks in non-conference play tonight at U.S. Bank Arena.
The Bearcats are returning from a nine-day break, as they were last appeared in a 94-57 rout of Texas Southern on December 1st. It marked the program's largest margin of victory since Mick Cronin took over as head coach in 2006-07, as Cincinnati climbed to No. 19 in the rankings, its best showing since 2005.
As for the RedHawks, they haven't enjoyed quite the same kind success, posting only two wins against six losses. Most recently, the team couldn't get going offensively and fell 64-42 at Temple on Tuesday. The loss was the second in a row for Miami, which did give Kentucky (72-70) a scare in its only game versus a Top 25 team this season.
With regard to the head-to-head series, Cincinnati holds a commanding 92-52 lead over Miami and the Bearcats have won each of the past 10 meetings.
The RedHawks shot a dismal 35.4 percent from the floor, including a poor 4- of-19 showing from long range, as they were held to a season-low 42 points in a loss to Temple on Tuesday. Miami went just 4-of-8 at the foul line as well and even the lost the battle on the boards, 36-31. Nick Winbush logged a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards to pace the team in defeat, while Kenny Hayes also had 10 points. Hayes currently leads the squad in scoring with 12.8 ppg for the season and he is also distributing a team-best 4.1 apg. Winbush nips at his heels with 12.6 ppg and he is a 48.9 percent three-point shooter.
The Bearcats have done a real good job slowing down opponents this season, as they are holding foes to just 37.3 percent shooting from the floor. Cincinnati has also fared well to keep team's from following up missed shots, as the Bearcats are outrebounding opponents by 12.8 rpg. Yancy Gates is a big reason for the success on the boards with a team-high 8.3 rpg to his credit and he is also producing a team-best 12.2 ppg. Deonta Vaughn is a close second at 12.0 ppg, to go with a team-high 4.8 apg, while Lance Stephenson checks in with 10.7 ppg and 5.5 rpg. Rashad Bishop adds 9.8 ppg and 6.0 rpg to the mix and he led the way with 14 points and six boards in a rout of Texas Southern in the team's last game. Cincinnati limited Texas Southern to a mere 33.3 percent shooting from the floor, while dominating the glass, 47-25.
