Cubs finish sweep of D'Backs

Baseball Betting Lines

07/08/2010 - Phoenix, AZ (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Ryan Dempster beat Arizona for the first time in nearly 10 years and Aramis Ramirez clubbed a three-run homer, as the Chicago Cubs completed their first three-game sweep at Chase Field with an 8-3 win over the Diamondbacks.

Ramirez, who hit a pair of two-run blasts in a 6-4 win on Tuesday, helped the Cubs to their second series sweep on the road this season. They took three games in Milwaukee April 23-25.

Starlin Castro stroked the go-ahead, two-run single in the fifth inning for the Cubs, who also have won three straight for the first time since May 22-25 and picked up their fourth consecutive win on the road for the first time since July 1-16, 2009 when they won five road games in a row.

Dempster (7-7) was charged with eight hits and three runs over five innings. The right-hander moved to 2-6 lifetime against Arizona with the only previous win coming September 2, 2000, when he pitched for Florida.

Edwin Jackson (6-7), pitching for the second time since his no-hitter June 25 at Tampa Bay, permitted six hits and five runs over five innings. He had his three-start winning streak broken. The righty lost for the first time since May 28 at San Francisco as the Diamondbacks lost their fifth in a row.

Marlon Byrd doubled in a run in the fourth inning and scored on Alfonso Soriano's single to left field. The Cubs loaded the bases later in the frame and Dempster pushed a bunt to the first-base side. Jackson dove for the ball, but couldn't make the grab as a third run scored.

Jackson singled in a run and Chris Young had a two-run base hit in the bottom of the inning to tie the game.

Chicago loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth before Castro singled to left field to plate Ryan Theriot and Byrd.

Theriot and Lee singled to start the top of the ninth against Chad Qualls. One out later, Ramirez homered to left field.

Game Notes

The Cubs are 10-2 against National League West competition this season, including 6-1 against the Diamondbacks...Dempster snapped a five-game losing skid to Arizona...Prior to the game, the Cubs recalled pitcher Mitch Atkins from Triple-A Iowa and placed pitcher Brian Schlitter on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 3, with a right shoulder impingement.

With the field of 64/65 set, MySportsbook.com has the Florida Gators as the 4-1 favorite to successfully defend their National Championship.  Men’s Division-1 College Basketball has not seen a team repeat as National Champions since Duke won back to back championships in ’91 & ‘92.  After losing three out of four late in the season, the Gators are full of momentum as they won their last four games by an average of 18 points.  Not surprisingly, right behind the Gators are the other three top seeds: Kansas 5-1, UNC 6-1, and Ohio State 7-1.  Many consider Kansas to be the hottest team in the country, having won 11 straight. With Kansas, it is hard to ignore all of the early exits from the “dance” in recent years.  With an impressive ACC Tournament, UNC ensured themselves the other top seed.  UNC has about as much talent as any other team in the tournament but with a team that’s best players are primarily freshman and sophomores, could youth be a concern.  Behind freshman sensation, Greg Oden, OSU will look to do what their football team failed to do just a few months earlier.  OSU seems to have peeked at the right time, as they currently have a 17 game winning streak.  Since the tournament field was expanded in 1985, there has never been an instance where all four #1 seeds advanced to the Final Four.  It is obvious that each of the top seeds have the talent to make it through to Atlanta.  But as everyone knows, when makes the NCAA Tournament so special are all of the spoilers and “Cinderella” stories that knock off the favorites on a daily basis.

The San Francisco 49ers (5-11 SU, 5-10-1 ATS in 2007; 1-1 SU & ATS in pre-season) found some offensive life last week, and they will try to build some momentum on Thursday night as they travel to the Windy City to take on the Chicago Bears (7-9 SU & ATS in 2007; 0-2 SU, 0-1-1 ATS in pre-season) in an NFL matchup that is set to get underway at 8 PM ET at Soldier Field (natural turf) in Chicago.

Thursday, August 21

NFL betting odds: CHICAGO -3 (-120), Total 37

NOTABLE STAT: San Francisco was last in points, last in total offense in 2007
KEY NFL BETTING TREND: SF has lost its last seven SU on pre-season road

In the BetUS NFL pre-season football betting odds, the Bears are listed as a three-point favorite (laying -120), with the total posted at 37 points.

Here are some NFL football betting trends as they relate to this matchup (reflecting numbers going into the 2008 season):

* SF has lost 11 of its last 14 games SU
* SF has covered three of its last 11 games
* SF has lost six of its last seven road games SU
* SF has covered one of its last seven road games
* CHI has covered five of its last eight games
* CHI has played five of its last seven games OVER the total
* CHI has covered four of its last 13 home games
* SF has lost its last seven pre-season road games SU
* CHI has covered two of its last seven home pre-season games

Well, I guess we should congratulate the Bears on making their quarterback choice for the season's opening game, as they have designated Kyle Orton the starter against Indianapolis. The Bears obviously have lost patience with Rex Grossman, and what they do with him at this point is anybody's guess. But suffice it to say that there isn't a quarterback competition anymore, at least in training camp.

Meanwhile, the quarterback competition may also be settled in San Francisco, where the Niners bounced back from a lackluster 18-6 loss to the Raiders, in which they turned the ball over four times, to execute a 34-6 rout of the Packers last Saturday. However, coach Mike Nolan has stopped short of saying that, insisting that the job is still open. But J.T. O'Sullivan, the longshot of the trio of Niner signal-callers who opened camp, will start his third straight pre-season game here. Against Green Bay, O'Sullivan was only 8-for-17, and was intercepted, but he also threw for 9.1 yards an attempt, which included a 59-yard TD pass to Josh Morgan. The others struggled.

Some offensive cohesion is badly needed, in light of the Niners' dismal 2007 campaign, in which they were dead last in the NFL in scoring, with just 13.7 points a game. And O'Sullivan is the guy who is most familiar with offensive coordinator Mike Martz's exacting system, because he learned it last year in Detroit. O'Sullivan will go at least the entire first half and may even last longer. He'll be relieved by Alex Smith, with Shawn Hill doing the mop-up work. Three receivers who were out last week - Bryant Johnson, Ashley Lelie and Arnaz Battle - will miss this game too.

That may hurt a little here, especially since the Bears will be using a lot of their defensive starters. And it's the defense that has been keeping the Bears in games thus far. In fact, the defense and special teams were responsible for the first 19 points Chicago scored against Seattle last time out, as the offense really struggled with Grossman at the controls. But maybe the first-team offense has a chance to settle a little bit as it works more with Orton at the helm.

Certainly we have concerns about the Bears' offensive line, but we like the scenario for them here, especially if O'Sullivan doesn't make some bis plays. The Niners may have nowhere else to turn right now, and they have lost seven straight road games in the pre-season. Let's take Chicago, the three-point favorite in the NFL football betting odds.
