Braves power past Reds for third straight win

Baseball Betting Lines

04/25/2009 - Cincinnati, OH (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Chipper Jones and Yunel Escobar each homered and drove in four runs, leading the Atlanta Braves to a 10-2 rout of the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park.

Jones belted a three-run homer and added a run-scoring single in the victory, while Escobar was 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and three runs scored. David Ross also had two hits with an RBI and two runs scored for the Braves, who notched a 4-3 triumph in the series-opener Friday and have won three in a row.

Derek Lowe (2-1) pitched seven strong innings to earn his second win of the season and first since Opening Night at Philadelphia. He was 0-1 with a pair of no-decisions in three starts since throwing eight shutout innings against the Phillies, and on Saturday limited Cincinnati to a pair of runs on four hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.

Cincinnati's Bronson Arroyo (3-1) lost for the first time in four starts this season. He had allowed nine runs in his first 19 1/3 innings, but the Braves battered him for nine runs on nine hits in just 5 2/3 frames.

Alex Gonzalez clubbed a two-run homer for the Reds, who had won two straight and four of five games before Atlanta hit town.

The Braves grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Kelly Johnson led off with a walk and scored on a double to left-center by Escobar, who took third when the relay to home by shortstop Gonzalez bounced away for an error. Jones followed with a base hit to right, scoring Escobar.

Ross started a four-run Atlanta rally in the second with a one-out infield single and Lowe drew a walk. After Johnson bounced into a force out, Escobar singled home Ross and Jones connected for his second homer of the season to make it 6-0.

Cincinnati got two back in the bottom of the second when Jay Bruce doubled and scored ahead of Gonzalez's first homer of the year.

The Reds threatened in the fifth after Ryan Hanigan led off with a double. Arroyo then dropped down a bunt and Hanigan made it to third after escaping a rundown. Arroyo took second on the play, but Lowe struck out the next three batters to keep it a four-run game.

Atlanta then tacked on three runs in the sixth. Jordan Schafer led off with a double over the head of left fielder Chris Dickerson and scored when Dickerson was unable to haul in Ross' shot toward the left field line. Dickerson got a glove on Ross' ball, which was ruled a double. After the next two batters were retired, Escobar drilled his second homer of the season to make it 9-2, ending Arroyo's day.

Schafer walked to start the eighth and scored on a double by pinch hitter Greg Norton for the final margin.
